When a sentence contains the word of ‘thank you’, it would be more acceptable to be heard than a rude imperative one. A simple example is the use of “Speaking English Area” compares to “Thank you for Speaking in English.” The first sentence is similar to an alert of “Hazardous Area,” or “Bio-Hazard Area.” I mean that the use of this kind of term is not easily to be heard. If I take a position of some one who never speak English and have no interest to speak English, this kind of alert will drive me out of the room in which this statement hanged-up. First time I read this alert, as an unspoken English person, I am going totally down and fully nervous. As result, this room is a nightmare for me and I will never have intention to enter.
But, lets think if we change the statement to “Thank you for Speaking in English.” As an unspoken English person, I will think that I SHOULD start speaking English. Whatever I speak. It is more motivating people to speak English without any pressure. And people will think that he will more appreciated when using English as his spoken language. But, when he does not do it, there will be no problem. As result, people probably feel more comfortable to enter the room.
I can conclude that training people to speak English need an effective strategy. Training has been aimed to make a change. And change is a process, NOT event. We need certain period of process to make a change. The best way to make people have a habit of speaking in English is by delivering it naturally. Let anyone speak English as their knowledge. We, as an English teacher, should use our students’ point of view in determining how well should they speak English.
